Choosing a server and configuring DNS

Choosing and preparing a server#

Rockstat is installed on your own server. Both physical and virtual servers are suitable.

Danger! High Voltage! Rockstat requires a dedicated server with no other software on it. Installation should be performed only on a fresh operating system. Everything required will be installed automatically and reconfigured for the platform's specifics.

Minimum requirements#

  • Server resources
    • 2+ CPU core
    • 8+ Gb MEM
    • 60+ Gb SSD disk
    • OS Ubuntu 16.04 64bit;
  • A domain name, preferably a subdomain of your main domain, such as rstat.mysite.ru.

For testing, a configuration half this size will be enough. Under heavy loads of 5+ million visits per month, a more powerful configuration is required.

Choosing a provider#

Any provider with full virtualization and "honest" resource allocation will do.

Hosting in Russia, below-average pricing for the country, very decent quality.

Hosting in Europe, they give $100 for 2 months of testing

Hosting in Europe at extremely attractive prices. Hetzner.

Under heavy loads you can use physical servers.

DNS configuration#

The server must have a domain name; it is best to use a subdomain of your main domain, for example rstat.mysite.ru. You need to point the domain name at the server's IP address.

Basic principles of configuring the DNS zone#

By this point you should have a server up and running with an operating system installed. Add 2 additional records to the DNS zone description:

subdomain A 1.2.3.4
*.subdomain A 1.2.3.4

Example:

rstat A 46.161.39.109
*.rstat A 46.161.39.109

As a rule, you only need to specify the subdomain, omitting the domain name.

Depending on the service where your domain is managed, the process of entering the data can vary a lot. Note! DNS is configured not where the server is located, but where the domain is registered or managed. Check this with your system administrator.
